Help us show Buddy what it feels like to be loved and cared for in his golden years.

On March 28th, Officer Tim Gada, one of the newer members of the Pratt Police Department, brought us a dog he found wandering in the middle of the street. This small dog was completely matted, with overgrown nails and numerous fleas. His skin was raw in areas from chewing and scratching due to fleas. His teeth are in very poor condition and will likely require most to be removed.

Upon his arrival at PAHS, we immediately began working on him. We scanned him for a microchip and documented his condition with photos. He wasn't microchipped and lacked any form of identification. We decided to start the process of helping him feel better. We shaved off all the mats from this tiny, underweight, SWEET boy. He stood still and allowed us to gently remove all the mats, even those on his face that were stuck to his skin with embedded stickers.

PAHS contacted the owner, and after some discussion, we agreed that it would be best for Buddy to stay with us. Buddy has been examined by our shelter veterinarian, and his treatment plan is underway. Buddy has started a course of antibiotics to prepare him for dental cleaning and extractions scheduled for April 22nd at VCA Central Kansas Animal Hospital. He will be neutered tomorrow, April 6th, at Hi-Plains. After his neuter, he will go into foster care to recover in a home setting where he will be spoiled and pampered.

Fortunately, Buddy tested negative for heartworm and appears to be a playful, energetic, affectionate little 12-year-old dog. He gets very excited when he sees other dogs, and one of our shelter dogs named PAM seems to be his favorite when he sees her through the fence. Opposites attract, I suppose. She weighs 80 lbs and isn't very fond of other dogs, but she seems to like little 8 lb Buddy.

We want to give Buddy as much love, care, and pampering as we can for as long as he has left. To give Buddy the best chance at several more years of love, he will need extensive and costly medical procedures. We are asking for donations to help with these procedures. Buddy is a senior dog and is considered a moderate to high-risk patient. This is common for any senior-aged animal but doesn't mean that every effort shouldn't be made to give him a healthy senior life. It just means more safety measures should be taken, which results in higher expenses for PAHS.

We will do whatever is necessary for Buddy. He isn't ready to give up on life, and he deserves a chance to experience being a loved member of someone's family. If you can help us with a monetary donation, we would greatly appreciate it. Donations can be made in cash, check, or card over the phone. You can also send donations through the Venmo or PayPal links on our website and Facebook page. You may also call VCA Central Kansas Animal Hospital directly at 620-663-8387 and make a donation to his account under Pratt Area Humane Society. Thank you so much for supporting us in our efforts to improve the lives of community animals. We couldn't do it without you.
